Story of winning a lottery
88Raja, my friend, pressed the calling bell and as I opened the door he came in , smiled, shook my hands and said ‘Congratulation ! ’ I really could not make out what his congratulation was all about. As we sat on the sofa he said ‘ I had thought you would not keep the matter to yourself only, at least you would let me know !’
I got puzzled and said ‘ Raja, I don’t know what you are talking about !’
Knowing that I have a high blood pressure he asked me to sit down and relax and then said ‘ Really ? Don’t you honestly know that you have won the lottery ? ’I looked blank and couldn’t resist my excitement ‘ Raja, come on, don’t keep me waiting, please tell me what I have won ?’
‘Well my dear friend, be patient and at first please take a deep breath.’ Then after a pause, he reminded me of the lottery tickets which we both had bought about a month back. I looked at him and eagerly waited to hear more.
Raja smiled and said ‘ Now listen very carefully , what I am saying is true. You have won the first prize, yes first prize my friend and the amount is Fifty Lac Rupees.’ He spoke each word slowly and very clearly . Then he took out a newspaper cutting from his pocket and said ‘ Look at this ticket number, I know it is yours, it has to be , come on if you don’t believe me bring your ticket.’
I was overjoyed, left the room and soon returned with a number of lottery tickets which I had kept nicely in my file. Raja read out the number and I checked the number printed on my ticket. Yes it was the exact number !
My joy knew no bounds, I started to wonder what I would do with such a huge sum of money. Soon my wife and son came. They were very excited too and my wife started phoning up all our dear and near ones to convey the news.
Mrs. Basu, the elderly lady who lived next door, heard the news from my wife. She soon came in and congratulated me in a low voice and asked us to close all the doors and windows. She then wanted to know whether Nandu , our servant , was at home. On being told that he had been sent to the market about half an hour ago, she was relieved and said ‘ Thank God, well you must not trust a person so quickly and please be very careful these days, there are rogues around ’, Also she advised that I must not go alone to collect the money and once collected I should straightway deposit the money to my Bank Account.
Raja, along with my
son and two of my uncles, both body builders, accompanied me to collect the money. I felt safe and kept on looking at the Ticket and giving it kisses.
we almost reached our destination driving very fast all the way when , all of a sudden, all my happiness ended in smoke. I heard Nandu calling me. I opened my eyes to see that he was standing near my bed with a cup of tea in his hand. I was so upset to realize that I was having a dream but why the hell he had to wake me up at a time when my dream was about to reach its climax ! Nandu has done this in the past also – many of my sweet dreams in the early mornings remained incomplete due to this stupid boy’s awaking call with bed tea.
Nandu stood there for a while, presumably understood the reason of my angry look and then left , as fast as he could, after placing the tea cup on my bedside table.
Next day I received a call from Raja just after I had my breakfast. He said he would come and meet me after an hour and so he did. I told him about the dream and we had a good laugh.
We went to the local club as we normally do on Sundays. Some of our friends were already there. Mr. Brown, the Club Secretary, had a chat with us and we all went around the clubhouse to see the renovation work being done to the building and then returned to the bar.
Mr.Brown took out a list from his pocket, looked at it and then asked me if I would buy one lottery ticket for Rs.100/- . And then he said ‘ You didn’t attend the Club meeting last month, not only club members but outsiders are also buying the tickets. We are having very good response from all and after paying the prize money we will have enough in our club fund and this will help contribute towards the renovation expenses.’
Knowing that this would do good to the club I bought the ticket straightway and some of my friends, who had not bought their tickets earlier, followed suit.
We had a great time in the club playing table tennis, chatting to friends and then we had some drinks and lunch too . In the afternoon, as we were about to leave, we saw many of the members gathered outside the Secretary’s Office and also we could hear some announcement and then Mr. Brown called out my name on the loudspeaker asking me to hurry up and meet him.
I almost ran along with all my friends. He smiled and congratulated me on my winning the first prize in the draw and handed over to me Five Thousand Rupees, in cash. I was very happy to receive the prize money , it was real and I could touch and feel.
Five Thousand Rupees, however very small amount that could be, seemed a lot to me compared to Fifty Lac Rupees which I had won only in a dream.

Nice Story, its funny how things are relative , Had you not had the dream perhaps you would have been more excited at winning the five thousand . I guess winning fells basically the same regardless of size. Our imagination gets more excited at an amount that is outside our experience.

Hi Harian, how right you are ! Yes, perhaps we all have some dream or fantasy about what to do if we won huge and really huge sum of money on a lottery. Once or twice there had been occasions when I was in a world of fantasy thinking about all these and got so carried away that I jotted down in a piece of paper as to how much to invest, where to invest, how much to give on charity, what are the very expensive things that I should buy etc. etc. etc. Doesn't it sound very crazy ?

I actually got a few numbers right once and I won $70 US. I was excited and thought it was going to be much more. It sucks when you win but don't get much.

Well I think I would have sought some Expert's advice as to where to invest after setting aside some money to throw a party and have good fun and also give some to Charity.
